Chunga, Ndlovu to grace Copa Coca-Cola

competition in Victoria Falls over the weekend.
The Boys and Girls’ Under Under-16 and Under-17 tournament is set to kick off tomorrow and end on Sunday with vetting of the players being conducted today.
Twelve teams will compete in each category.
Ndlovu and his generation of players, which included the late Benjamin Nkonjera, rose from the junior ranks with such tournaments like the Copa Coca-Cola giving them the platform to showcase their talents.
The likes of Samson Choruwa, Eddie Mashiri, Ovidy Karuru, Knowledge Musona, Archford Gutu and Washington Arubi also came through the same system.
This weekend, it will be the turn of the emerging talent from 12 schools to showcase their potential and with national Under-23 coach and Warriors legend Ndlovu on hand to watch them, there could not have been better inspiration.
Ndlovu was also recently in Poland with some of the finest Under-13 players for VW World Junior Masters tournament.
In the competition in Victoria Falls, the Boys category will see Hwange, Mutoko, Dzivaresekwa 2, Chiodza, Marange, Luveve, Manunure, Mzingwane, Rimuka, Mosi-a-Tunya, Pamushana and Centenary fighting for honours.
Hosts Mosi-a-Tunya, Matinunura, Mutondwe, Sobvubu, Selonga, Chidyamakono, Vainona, Kambarami, Goko, Glen View 1, Madzorera and Masotsha will compete in the Girls’ section.
Ndlovu will be joined by another Warrirors and Dynamos legend Chunga, Hwange’s Zambian coach, Tenant Chilumba, Mighty Warriors captain, Onai Chingawo and former Highlanders coach Mukhupali Masuku.
Senior franchise brand manager for Coca-Cola Zimbabwe, Mona Karingi, said the idea was to inspire the young players through people who have made it in the sport.
“For Peter it will be three years now. He was there in Masvingo in 2010, in Marondera last year and now he will be there in Victoria Falls. It’s also very special for him because he comes from that region and it’s really going to inspire the youngsters and even his fans would want to connect with him.
“We want to show the young players that these people have made it in life through sport. We want them to know that anywhere around the world you can make it through sport and encourage them to work hard.
“Onai is just an ordinary girl who has made it and we want them to feel it so that they can be inspired,” said Karingi.
Karingi said they were looking forward to a competitive tournament in both the boys and girls sections.
“Our expectations are high because we look forward to get the best Zimbabwe talent.
“As Coca-Cola we are proud that Walter Musona, who was our captain last year when we went to Chelsea, is now in the Warriors Under-20. That’s the kind of development we expect to realise.
“From the girls competition we have three players who are in the Under-20 and we expect that to continue because that’s our thrust to have the young players showcase their talent. We expect high competition and of course the best team will win,” said Karingi.
