SELBOURNE Christian Church youth choir, Arise, yesterday handed over $40 000, mattresses, bedding, clothing and stationery to Hillside Teachers’ College after one of the institution’s hostels was gutted by fire last month.
Pastor Ronald Kwenda and youth choir members, Miss Shirley Khumbula and Miss Glenda Chihohwa handed over the money and goods to the college’s principal, Mrs Linda Sibindi and acting vice-principal Mr Ishmael Moyo at a brief ceremony at the college.
Pastor Kwenda also pledged to seek more donations to help refurbish the hostel.
He said the money was raised from donations from the choir and church members.
Mrs Sibindi thanked the church and the choir for their kind gesture.
“May I show my appreciation to Arise choir. It is in times like these that we see that there are people out there that have a heart, especially young people who have been friends indeed when we are so much in need,” she said.
Hillside College teachers’ student representative Mr Nigel Sibindi said students were grateful as learning and staying in a conducive environment was key to their studies.
Property worth more than $1 million was destroyed when the hostel was gutted by fire leaving almost 100 male students stranded in September.
No one was injured during the inferno.
