‘Church tax a terrible error’

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority will be making a terrible mistake if it taxes churches, Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries leader Prophet Walter Magaya said yesterday. He, however, said his church would comply if the law into force. At Tshwane Events Centre where he held a four-day crusade, Prophet Magaya said, “So, then they say, ‘We want to tax you.’ I don’t know where we will head (to), but I tell you; that’s a very terrible mistake.

“(Nevertheless) if there is any rule in our nation which makes me to comply I will. I don’t have a right of saying to any national law that I can’t comply. I will, but you see, there will be a huge effect than anything else.”

He added: “I will give them all the figures that they want. Yes, I will definitely put it on record. . . so and so; everything! And I think some of the people are going to be surprised by some of the names there because I will place every name.”

Four months ago, Zimra said it was crafting a legislative tax framework for churches. Tax authorities reportedly stormed PHD Ministries, demanding information on Prophet Magaya’s donations to various organisations.
