A 23-YEAR-OLD Bulawayo man drowned while swimming with his friends during a church trip to Nkayi on Boxing Day .
Henry Chikosha is allegedly to have gone to fetch water from Boyabembuzi stream in KoFrank Village in Nkayi during the church trip early in the morning last Friday and ended up swimming until he met his fate.
His friends tried to save him to no avail.
When Chronicle news crew visited the Chikosha family home in Magwegwe West suburb, Henry’s uncle, who declined to identify himself, was hostile and declined to divulge more information.
“We will not tell you anything, you want to sell your paper through our story. Give us your numbers we will call you tomorrow if we want to give you details.” said the uncle.
Henry wrote his Upper Six public examinations late this year and was waiting for results at the time of his death.
Former classmates and scores of youths were part of the mourners at the Magwegwe family home.
A close relative who spoke on condition of anonymity said Henry had visited Nkayi during a church trip and went to the stream to fetch water where he drowned on December 26.
“The boys were tempted to swim and Henry disappeared in the midst of deep waters of the stream. The boys alerted his mother who then called the police. The police sub-aqua department retrieved the body on Sunday around 4PM.
“I suspect maybe he was taken by a mermaid,” said the relative.
Matabeleland North Police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Siphiwe Makonese said she was yet to receive details in connection with the drowning case.
Three weeks ago, a nine-year-old boy from Cowdray Park suburb drowned when he lost control of a container that he was using to float on water in a large pit left open by Bulawayo City Council (BCC) workers.
