A SUSPECTED rapist awaiting sentence at Khami Remand Prison yesterday begged a Bulawayo magistrate to release him from jail claiming he was tired of being sodomised by other inmates. Desire Dube,18, who has been in custody since October this year after he allegedly raped a six-year-old girl who was on her way home from school in Nkayi in May, was sent back to jail with authorities being directed to probe the sodomy allegations.
Dube is in remand prison awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to the rape charge.
Yesterday, he begged regional magistrate Mark Dzira to remand him out of custody as he was allegedly being sodomised repeatedly, even during day time.
“It’s a dreadful experience to go back to prison Your Worship because other inmates are sodomising me, even in broad daylight. I have even reported the matter to a prison officer but nothing has been done,” he said.
Dube added that he does not know the names of the men who were sodomising him but he was able to identify them.
Magistrate Dzira advised him to make an aggravated indecent assault report to the police so that the matter is investigated before remanding him in custody to January 5, 2015.
Prosecuting, Malvern Nzombe told the court that on May 30 at around 12PM, the six-year-old girl was on her way home from school when she met Dube.
“Dube grabbed the girl and dragged her into a bush threatening to harm her if she screamed,” said Nzombe.
“He raped her once, threatened to kill her if she ever revealed the matter to anyone and ran away.”
The court heard that the girl proceeded home and kept the ordeal to herself.
Dube allegedly tried to rape the girl once again on July 2 but he was caught removing the girl’s clothes by a passerby only identified as Sibanda.
Sibanda informed her guardian, who then reported the matter to the police leading to Dube’s arrest.
The victim was taken to hospital for an examination and it revealed that she had been raped.
