Churches converge for prayers at Seke Road accident scene

Following last month’s devastating head‑on collision that claimed the lives of 17 people along Seke Road, our Reporter Remember Deketeke gives you live updates as members of the Zimbabwe Council of Churches march from St Mary’s Police Station to the accident scene in a demonstration of solidarity and a call for healing for the bereaved families.

Today’s march also seeks to raise road safety awareness.

Some of the denominations present include United Methodist Church, Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, Anglican, Salvation Army and Reformed Church in Zimbabwe, among others.

Participants are carrying placards with messages of compassion, road safety, and communal healing. Clergy members are leading prayers and hymns.

The crowd was met at the accident scene by local community leaders and affected families.

The accident, which occurred near Manyame Bridge, involved a haulage truck and a commuter omnibus that was going to Chitungwiza.

Chief Seke adds voice to calls for road safety

Chief Seke, who is present, has strongly condemned the growing culture of buying driver’s licences, a dangerous practice that continues to claim innocent lives on our roads.

He expressed gratitude to the ZCC congregation for coming together in prayer, standing with the nation in its time of mourning, and seeking divine intervention to reduce the tragic accidents along the country’s roads.

Chief Seke called for behaviour change on the roads, reminding the nation that safety starts with the individual.

He said it takes all of us to keep each other safe.

Prayer for accident accident-free holidays

Currently, those in attendance are praying for God to protect everyone on the country’s roads, especially as the nation approaches the Heroes and Defence Force holiday.
