Churches have been urged to help and care for the needy, marginalised and orphans, and not discriminate against them.
Kingdom Fire International Church founder, pastor Enerst Manyika, made the remarks while donating groceries worth hundreds of dollars to the elderly in Glen View on Sunday.
Pr Manyika said remembering those in need was the reflection of true Christianity.
He said it was key for the church to lead the call to take care of the needy as not all problems faced by Christians are spiritual.
“We started small in December 2022 with only 10 parcels, but we are happy to have managed to provide more groceries this time around.
‘‘This is not going to be a once-off event as we look forward to doubling what we gave today to the elderly, not only from our church, but from around GlenView,” he said.
“We derive great inspiration from people like Tabitha in the Bible who were known for their good deeds and charity work.
“The recipients of these good deeds were witnesses and because of that she was raised from the dead.
‘‘Those who came before us made great examples for us and we are challenged as the church to continue showing compassion to others who are less privileged because not all problems we face in life are spiritual.
“Some are physical and it is not easy to preach the gospel to someone who is hungry, so this is where we come in with the hampers.”
Pr Manyika intimated that the way Christians interact in their communities determined how people perceived them.
“If we don’t take care of the underprivileged then we have failed as the church.
‘‘Wearing suits and driving classy cars alone is not enough, but it is how we treat our brothers and sisters which depicts who we really are to the world.
“By giving to the needy, we are also teaching our young children to learn and know the importance of giving and sharing so that when they grow up they will always be aware of the importance of selflessness in life,” he said.
