CHURCHILL High School ended the Power Sales Schools Rugby Festival unbeaten when they clobbered Christian Brothers College in an emotionally charged concluding match of the rugby fiesta on a muddy Hartsfield Rugby Ground in Bulawayo yesterday.
Coached by Jeffrey Madake, the Churchill Bulldogs showed no mercy for the CBC Hornets, under the mentorship of Neil Nesbitt. Churchill who led 26-5 at halftime scored six tries, with four of them converted while CBC only got one try from winger Lesley Mabaleka whose conversion kick was not successful.
Churchill finished the match with 14 players on the field of play, with winger Robin Chionyere sent off by referee Shemeah Mushiribindi for retaliating as well as using bad language at the match official. CBC were also one man short at the end of the encounter as skipper Zane Pittaway was sent to the sin bin for repeated infringements.
Front rower Albert Gotora, centre Takudzwa Mundandishe, wing Gabi Benson, backline player Tinotenda Zishiri, skipper Kenneth Chirombo and forward Richard Mutukwa went over the line for Churchill with flyhalf Joshua Mukurazhizha booting in four conversion kicks.
On the first day of the two day rugby fiesta, Churchill drubbed Milton High School 59-7.
In other notable matches played yesterday, Gifford beat Gateway 10-6, Allan Wilson edged Plumtree 20-18 while Petra recorded a rare 10-8 triumph over Milton, a result that will further infuriate Old Miltonians who watched in disbelief as their former school lost to a team they have beaten with ease over the years.
It came as no surprise that Churchill were voted the most outstanding Under-19 team at the festival while Girls High took the honours in the girls section. Madake walked away with the best coach accolade while his players Mukurazhizha clinched the best backline player and Zvikomborero Muzorewa took home the prize for the most outstanding forward.
