games from third team down to the Under-14s are expected to go ahead as scheduled at St John’s College in Borrowdale.
It all started at the annual Cottco Schools’ rugby festival four weeks ago when St John’s coach and former Sables flyhalf, Garry “Gazza” Hewitt, erupted and went on to manhandle a Churchill player.
Hewitt felt the Churchill schoolboy had gone in too hard on his player.
In a tension-filled game, a red card was flashed out early before the Bulldogs came from behind to beat the Rams 31-11.
They had trailed 10-11 at the end of the first period.
However, the schools rugby body are unhappy over the incident in which Hewitt was cautioned.
The authorities feel the two sides must allow the dust to settle and it is too early for them to meet after the Cottco debacle.
According to the rules of the current Super League whoever forfeits or cancels a fixture will have to handover all points to their opponents.
If both teams were in agreement over the cancellation then they share the spoils.
Rivalry between the two sides has been growing with each passing year.
The Bulldogs have dominated their meetings.
It is also understood the Zimbabwe Rugby Union also poked their noses into the matter and felt the Bulldogs were likely to be violent today if the game had proceeded.
The ZRU, said the sources, declined to “guarantee the safety of the St John’s coach”.
The two teams are again expected to meet on June 29.
