Churu Constituency has rolled out free short courses under the Tonganyika Trust, a community empowerment initiative spearheaded by Hunyani legislator and Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Cde Tongai Mnangagwa.
The programme is equipping residents with practical skills to boost employment, entrepreneurship, and self-reliance, aligning grassroots development with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030.
The trust’s training programmes, which include baking, welding, healthcare and hospitality, are designed to transform livelihoods by offering accessible opportunities.
Speaking to Zimpapers, Tonganyika Trust national co-ordinator Mr Saul Murangwa said the scale and inclusivity of the programme highlight its role in safeguarding vulnerable groups across Zimbabwe.
“We have empowered nearly a million vulnerable groups towards Vision 2030 of attaining an upper-middle-income society,” he said.
“We want to make sure no one is left behind in this movement and make sure these skills will help families to succeed economically.”
By focusing on inclusivity and economic resilience, the initiative is not only uplifting families but also positioning communities to contribute meaningfully to national development.
In this regard, Harare South Southlea Park district officer Mr Jonas Mberikunashe said the programme is non-partisan and rooted in inclusivity, focusing on improving living standards.
“Everyone is invited to register for the programme, not affiliated to politics, but just make sure you come here sober, free from drugs and alcoholic substances.
“This programme is aimed at improving living standards through modernisation within the constituency,” he said.
Churu Constituency Ward 6 coordinator Cde Trust Rutsvara emphasised the programme’s potential to stimulate economic growth during challenging times.
“This initiative is set to drive economic growth, which is vital during these times. We believe these skills will anchor households and communities in building sustainable livelihoods,” he said.
Cde Patricia Chakombera, Ward 1 coordinator, highlighted how women are embracing skills traditionally dominated by men, reflecting inclusivity and empowerment within the programme.
“Women have taken up courses such as driving, welding, and other fields that are usually done by men,” he said.
“This demonstrates inclusivity and strengthens women’s empowerment by ensuring they can participate equally in skills development.”
