A CID Commercial Crimes Unit detective, Clever Daika, 59, appeared in court on Friday facing charges of extorting a drug peddler.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Daika accused Pamela Glenda of dealing in dangerous drugs and threatened to have her property seized by ZACC, claiming it was ill-gotten wealth from proceeds of crime.

“Allegations are that on the 10th of March, the accused person accused Pamela Glenda of dealing in dangerous drugs.

“He threatened to have her property seized by ZACC as he claimed that it was ill-gotten wealth that she had accumulated as proceeds of crime”

Daika was arrested after a tip off that he had demanded a US$500 bribe for him not to report the case to ZACC.

“The complainant reported the matter to the police, who set up a trap which led to the accused person’s arrest while he was still in possession of the money,” the NPA said.

Daika was remanded in custody pending bail ruling today.
