City allays water rationing fears

MASVINGO City Council has allayed fears of stringent water rationing, as the water levels at the main supply dam, Lake Mutirikwi, are still adequate to last more than a year.

This comes in the wake of reports that the water body with a capacity of four billion mega- litres is just above 50 percent full, despite the El Nino-induced drought which has already seen major dams in other provinces almost drying up.

In an interview last week, city engineer Tawanda Gozo assured residents that there was enough water for both domestic and industrial use up to the next rainy season.

He said the water challenges presently experienced were a result of incessant power cuts, as the line leading to the water works, was also not spared.

“We want to assure our residents and other stakeholders that we still have enough in our major dam,” said Eng Gozo.

“Lake Mutirikwi, from which our bulk water is drawn, remains resourceful given that the water levels are still high. We have at least 50 percent of the precious liquid in that reservoir and that can sustain the whole city beyond the expected period of up to the next rainy season. Therefore, there is no reason to panic.

“Let me categorically state that the current water challenge where city dwellers endure long hours of dry taps, is due to the incessant power cuts, but it will end soon.”

Eng Gozo said there were engagements with power utility Zesa Holdings to address the power supply to Bushmead Waterworks, in a bid to have uninterrupted water supply for the city.

“There is something brewing and I know residents will be happy,” he said.

“I cannot give the period it will take specifically, but the issue of power at our water works will soon be addressed and that one I can assure the residents.

“I am confident that Zesa will live up to its promise because we have told them about our challenges and they promised to address it.”
