Property owners in Harare’s Central Business District have begun refurbishing their buildings in preparation for the 44th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for Harare in August.
This comes at a time when key infrastructure such as roads, Information Communication Technology systems and accommodation are now almost ready.
A snap survey carried out by The Herald yesterday revealed that key infrastructure rehabilitation was taking place across the city. Hyatt Regency Harare The Meikles hotel is undergoing a transformation, with painting almost complete.
Meanwhile, the adjacent Africa Unity Square Garden is being revitalised, boasting new water fountains and a lush green landscape, which is being restored to its original splendour.
The Elizabeth Hotel, situated at the corner of Julius Nyerere Way and Robert Mugabe Road, is also undergoing refurbishment.
As part of the renovation, the hotel’s exterior is being repainted.
Barons Fashions, situated at 59 Robert Mugabe Road, Union Buildings, located at the corner of Robert Mugabe Road and Mayor Urimbo Terrace, and the building housing Star Liquors and Long Chen Plaza, along Bulawayo Road, are all undergoing refurbishment.
In an interview with The Herald, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Barbara Rwodzi expressed confidence in the country’s readiness to host SADC Summit, assuring that the country has sufficient accommodation to cater for all delegates.
“We are more than prepared at the moment,” she said.
“The Government has helped refurbish the Rainbow Towers Hotel, and just last week, we visited as a group to check on their progress. They are over 90 percent complete and expect to finish by July 15.
“Hyatt Regency Harare The Meikles, which is also undergoing refurbishment, will accommodate about five presidents, while Rainbow Towers will host around 11. Other hotels like Crowne Plaza Harare Monomotapa, Holiday Inn, and smaller hotels will accommodate delegates.”
The minister also revealed that they are presently arranging a range of outdoor events and activities in the vicinity of Harare, which will be available for delegates.
“Currently, we are discussing with operators what entertainment options we can offer during our visitors’ stay and recommending restaurants where they can take a break,” she added.
