Although statistics were not readily available, Mr Peterson said a number of business premises had been burnt down thereby rendering scores of people jobless.
Last year, a National Railways of Zimbabwe complex near the main railway station rented by scores of indigenous businesspeople was destroyed by fire and most of the businesspeople to stopped their operations.
Mr Peterson expressed concern that not much was being done about educating people on preventing fires at the workplace.
“Chapter 11 of the city bylaws states that every modern building should be fire resistant and that is exactly what we are trying to urge business to do,” he said.
He said the city fire fighting team was in the process of carrying out a risk assessment to come up with a report.
