FLYING Eagles Cycling Club will this weekend hold two events which will see cyclists compete on Matopos Road. The first race is a 30km event to be held on Saturday afternoon with the cyclists set to compete in a 72km contest on Sunday morning. The races, which are expected to attract at least 30 participants, will be used for rankings.

Chrispen Kazingizi, chairman of Flying Eagles Cycling Club said the competitions are part of the many races that they are planning to hold this year in their bid to revive the sport in the city.

He said everything was set for the race with the 30km competition starting at Tshabalala Game Park entrance and they will make a U-turn just after the Matopos Sailing Club.

Sunday’s race will also start at Tshabalala Game Park entrance with the cyclists going 36km along Kezi Road and then returning to finish at the starting point.

“This is an open event but we expect to have more of the elite cyclists. The guys have been training hard hoping to break into the national team. They know that they have to do well in local races so that by the time they go for national competitions they are geared up.

“On Saturday the race will start at 2pm at Tshabalala Game Park and on Sunday at 7.30am. It seems everyone is raring to go as guys have been seen changing their shocks and repairing their bicycles getting ready for the race,” said Kazingizi.

Most of the cyclists who will take part in tomorrow’s race participated in the Tour de Falcon.
Harare based Nkulumo “Nkust” Dube who was part of Team Zimbabwe at the Maputo All-Africa Games will be hoping to continue with his sterling performances.

Kazingizi, Eben Manaba and Ralph Mthupha are some of the elite cyclists expected to compete in both events.
Nkulumo, Mthupha, Manaba, Thomas Klassen, Busani Moyo, Mpumelelo Dube, Delwin Domingo and Tonderai Gore are some of the city’s cyclists who have a bright future in the sport.

Nkulumo said he was ready for the race.
“I have been racing this side in Harare and I’m looking forward to the races. I think it is going to be tough because the guys have also been                                              training hard and competition is going to be stiff,” said Nkulumo.
