The event is meant to recognise the country’s outstanding achievers in the genre this year.
Nominated artistes from the city are rappers POY and MAC who are up for three and one award respectively. City dance crews Anti-virus and Break Equation are set to battle it out in the dance crew of the year category.
In an interview, POY, who was nominated for the best male hip hop artiste, best music video and best album of the year, said the nomination alone was an achievement worth celebrating because it was victory.
“I am very excited because for me it is an honour just to be nominated for the awards. I am already celebrating so the outcome of either winning or losing will not mean much to me,” he said.
POY said this year’s nominations confirmed the consistency in his work and paid tribute to the success of his video of the popular song Mabomba.
“To win a Zimbabwe hip hop award would be great as we also won last year.”
POY said the presentation of the awards was a confirmation that the music genre had found its place in the music industry and will soon be at par with the traditional type of music that fans had been used to over the years.
“Being at the awards ceremony will provide us with a platform to meet and make deals with some of the country’s biggest hip hop artistes as well as meeting new producers and distributors in the music industry,” he said.
Anti-virus crew member Ricco Andrews said that he hoped that the crew’s recent success at the Jibilika Urban dance festival where they took first place will help them bag the best dance crew award.
“We are looking forward to the awards ceremony because we are confident of winning,” he said.
