HARARE City Health Director, Dr Prosper Chonzi, has called for the capital’s residents to be vigilant to avoid another outbreak of cholera.
He says the persistent heavy rains, which have caused flooding across several parts of Harare, have sparked fears of a potential cholera outbreak.
He urged residents to take preventive measures, including treating all water used for drinking and domestic purposes.
“People must prepare and remain vigilant at all times.
“It is critical that all water consumed or used in homes is properly treated to prevent infection,” Dr Chonzi said.
The City of Harare and the Ministry of Health said they are monitoring the situation closely and appealed to residents to report sewer bursts, avoid drinking untreated water and maintain cleanliness in their communities.
Dr Chonzi said the situation is particularly worrying in high-density suburbs such as Kuwadzana, Budiriro and Glen View, where flash flooding, sewer spillages and uncollected garbage have been reported.
“We are living in very dangerous times due to the continued threat of cholera in almost all our suburbs,” said Dr Chonzi.
“The incessant rains have resulted in flash flooding, sewer flowing in residential areas and garbage not being collected.
“If this continues, we are likely to experience a cholera outbreak.”
