City must spend

MELBOURNE. – Yaya Toure says Manchester City must keep spending if they want to challenge the likes of Real Madrid in Europe.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side take on the Spanish giants in a pre-season friendly in Melbourne today.

But while Real won the Champions League in 2014 and reached at least the semi-final every year since 2011, City’s record in the competition is woeful.

But they have splashed out £49 million on Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling this season, added Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph to their squad and could still land Wolfsburg star Kevin De Bruyne.

And Toure reckons big names must keep coming to the Etihad if they want to improve on four successive failures to go beyond the last 16 of the Champions League.

“The target of this club is to reach the level of Real Madrid,” he said.

“The most important thing is the good players stay at our club and that we also try to improve, although we know the market is not easy.” – Soccernet.
