The City of Bulawayo on Sunday paid its respects to Highlanders Football Club and the families of the four people who died in a tragic road traffic accident last Thursday, reaffirming the city’s solidarity with one of Zimbabwe’s most celebrated football institutions.
Highlanders chairman Retired Colonel Kenneth Mhlophe, vice-chairman Sifiso Siziba, executive committee member responsible for finance Nkani Khoza and devoted club supporter Mbalenhle Sibanda lost their lives in a road accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway, last Thursday, a tragedy that has plunged the nation into mourning
A City of Bulawayo delegation led by Mayor Councillor David Coltart, Deputy Mayor Councillor Edwin Ndlovu and Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube visited the Highlanders Club House, where they signed the book of condolences on behalf of the local authority.
In a gesture of support to the bereaved families, the City has provided burial spaces for the four deceased at the historic Lady Stanley Cemetery. Each family has also received US$1,000 to assist with funeral expenses.
The local authority has further availed Barbourfields Stadium for the combined funeral service, which is scheduled for Monday at 9am.
The City’s support adds to the growing number of tributes and gestures of solidarity from Government, corporate organisations, football clubs and members of the public, reflecting the immense contribution the late quartet made to Highlanders Football Club and the wider community.
