WHILE Bulawayo continues to reel under the effects of de-industrialisation, which has seen thousands of people losing jobs, analysts foresee a brighter future in the long term.The city marks 120 years of existence and prominent economic analyst and chairperson of the Bulawayo Development Committee, Dr Eric Bloch, believes the medium to long term future of the city is very bright.
Dr Bloch said the city has the most favourable conditions for attracting investment but was quick to point out that the pace of development was hinged on the performance of the national economy.
“It has to start with the recovery of the national economy. Bulawayo is poised for development because it still has the infrastructure for the recovery of industry,” he said.
Dr Bloch said thousands of skilled workers are still around.
He said the city was linked to neighbouring South Africa, Botswana and Zambia by rail and road.
Dr Bloch said once revived, Bulawayo industries can supply a market of up to 420 million people.
He said the growth being witnessed in the mining sector especially in Matabeleland had opened new opportunities for Bulawayo firms.
“Most developments in the mining sector are being witnessed in Matabeleland and Bulawayo is strategically positioned to benefit from this growth,” said Dr Bloch.
He added: “Given these developments this city is well placed for value addition.”
Dr Bloch also noted the positive developments in the tourism industry and said Bulawayo, being a historic and cultural centre, stands a better chance of benefiting from the sector.
He said despite the financial challenges affecting the country, Bulawayo has one of the best run local authorities that has well maintained public infrastructure and reacts swiftly to emergencies.
“People want a well managed city. With the recent connection of Mtshabezi water the city no longer has a serious problem and all this attracts economic activity,” said Dr Bloch.
