A cholera case has been confirmed in Mutare, amid indications that it could have emanated from within the municipal boundary.

In a Press statement, Mutare City spokesperson Mr Spren Mutiwi said the male patient tested positive and was undergoing treatment under quarantine.

“We have received one confirmed cholera case in Gimboki area,” he said. “The male patient tested positive to cholera and is responding well at our Mutare Infectious Diseases Hospital.

“He started vomiting on October 16 and was brought to the hospital where he is currently under the care of health officials.”

Mr Mutiwi said this was the first cholera case emanating from within the municipal boundary, with the others that tested positive being traced to other areas.

The first confirmed case originated from Budiriro 1 in Harare and the patient had come to Mutare with an overnight delivery, while the second case involved a child from Marange.

Mr Mutiwi assured the public that environmental health technicians were working flat out on the ground to contain the situation and that rapid response teams were on high alert.

“Environmental health technicians are on the ground and have since disinfected possible contamination sources at the affected patient’s residence,” he said. “Our rapid response team is already on the ground to enhance education awareness.”

Mr Mutiwi also urged the members of the public to exercise extreme hygiene at all times and in all places.
