PRINCE Edward Water Works will be forced to scale down operations if no rainfall is received soon, the Harare City Council has said.
In a statement, the Council said yesterday Prince Edward Water Works experienced a power failure between 2040 hours and 2255 hours, with pumping resuming at 0030 hours.
“No power outages were reported at Morton Jaffray and Warren Control Pump Station and the water levels in the P.E Water Works supply dams of Harava and Seke remains critically low (13.7 percent and 13.5 percent respectively),” Council said.
“If no rainfall is received soon, the plant will be forced to scale down operational hours by operating on alternating days.
“For example, operate for 24 hours and then completely shut down the plant for the next 24 hours.”
The Council said although the upstream dams of Dema 1 and Dema 2 were opened, no significant inflows have been recorded.
“Norton received about 6.4 ML over the past 24 hours,” the municipality said.
“Most of the southern suburbs supplied from P.E are receiving water and these include R.G. Mugabe International Airport, Cranborne and Hatfield, parts of Chitungwiza, Mbare, Sunningdale and Graniteside.
“The south western suburbs, including Glen Norah, Glen View, Kuwadzana, Budiriro and Rydle Ridge are receiving supplies.
“Supplies to the north western suburbs including Tynwald, Bloomingdale and Dzivaresekwa were restored yesterday.
“The northern suburbs, including Hatcliffe, Borrowdale, Mt. Pleasant, Hogerty Hill, Vainona, Groombridge, Gunhill, New Alex, Helensvale are not accessing water.
“Vainona, Groombridge, Gunhill, New Alex have been receiving water since yesterday.
“The CBD and most surrounding areas are accessing water.”
