Harare City Council, in partnership with various stakeholders, conducted an open street event on Saturday aimed at raising awareness on road safety for pedestrians, especially for students who walk to and from school.
The event was a collaboration with the Netherlands Embassy, Munich, Road Safe, Green & Clean, Buffalo Bicycles, GIZ, Bikes Zimbabwe, Cali Graph and volunteers.
An open street event is a car free space that connects communities through health, recreation and alternative forms of transport such as biking, skating and walking.
Various activities such as traditional dances, drum majorettes, skating, cycling, skipping, soccer and walking were done on the roads during the event.
It was held in response to the deaths of three students from Glen View 8 Council Primary School who died after being hit by vehicles at Willowvale and 23rd Street in the past three years.
Construction of speed humps and pedestrian crossing lines at the Willowvale and 23rd Street intersection was also done to reduce road traffic accidents.
The event also provided a platform for the community to participate in recreational activities and socialisation.
The huge turnout to the event showed the community’s eagerness to learn and connect.
