CIVIL servants from across the country’s 10 provinces yesterday celebrated President Mugabe’s belated 90th birthday in recognition of his strong revolutionary leadership and drive for indigenisation and economic empowerment. President Mugabe turned 90 on February 21. The main event was held in Harare while scores of civil servants in other parts of the country converged in their respective provinces and followed proceedings of the main luncheon that was beamed live on the national broadcaster, ZTV.
Civil servants in Bulawayo and Matabeleland North gathered at local hotels in the city where they spent some time reflecting on President Mugabe’s legacy.
The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs in Matabeleland South Cde Abedinico Ncube, joined the celebrations at Gwanda Club while the Midlands provincial administrator Cecilia Chitiyo welcomed civil servants on behalf of Cde Jason Machaya.
Scores of members of Civil Service Commission, service commissioners and members of the uniformed forces had a great time as they were treated to free lunch and took part in the cutting of the cake.
During the celebrations civil servants affirmed their support for the implementation of ZimAsset and rallied behind President Mugabe’s efforts towards creating an efficient, professional and disciplined civil service.
Matabeleland South provincial education director Tumisang Thabela said civil servants were grateful to have a leader like President Mugabe who had successfully lead the country for 34 years.
She said as civil servants they would emulate the President in executing their duties diligently for the development of the country.
“On our part as members in government, we promise to continue being committed to serving this country. We will serve our communities with much vision, principle and sacrifice like His Excellency,” she said.
Bubi District Administrator Leonard Ncube described the celebration as an honour to all civil servants.
“We are delighted to be granted such an honour to celebrate the birthday of our President. We have never been treated in such a manner and we are grateful. This gesture motivates us to work harder as civil servants and to implement the ZimAsset strategy to improve our livelihoods,” said Dube.
CSC chairman, Dr Mariyawanda Nzuwah said the commission requested to be afforded opportunity to celebrate President Mugabe’s birthday in honour of the long road he has travelled in the leadership of the country and the role he has played in delivering Zimbabwe’s political and economic freedom.
