Cleft lip operations target to help 60 children

Operation of Hope president, Dr Jennifer Trubenbach, said the surgeons successfully operated on 16 children yesterday.
“At the end of today 16 surgeries will be complete and at least 60 children will have been operated on by the end of the programme.
“We are using every medium to get the word about the programme around and we continue to urge parents who have children with such conditions to come and get help,” she said.
There are 17 surgeons from the US who are also training nurses from St Annes’ Hospital to equip them with the necessary skills for the operations.
“We have an operating room rotation where nurses are brought into the theatre for hands on training,” she said.
Parents whose children benefited from the programme also expressed joy for the operations. Mrs Emmah Majisi from Guruve said she was happy that her child received the treatment.
“My child has been living with cleft lip for the past eight years and I am very happy she will soon be looking normal like other children,” she said.
The annual programme is sponsored by well-wishers and has since benefited over 6000 children since 2006.
