Zimbabwe’s economic growth, poverty reduction efforts, hunger alleviation and environmental sustainability, a Government Minister has said.
Speaking during the United Nations Day celebrations in Harare last week, Acting Environment and Natural Resources Management Minister Ignatius Chombo said changes in climate and global warming were contributing to the pollution of the environment.
He commended various schools for setting up environmental clubs.
“In order to be in line with this development path my ministry came up with policies and programmes for proper management of our natural resources so as to create an enabling environment for the benefit of all Zimbabweans.
“One of the initiatives targeting youths has been the setup of environmental clubs in schools through the Environment Management Agency,” he said.
Minister Chombo expressed hope that the programme would benefit schools and their communities.
He urged the youths to participate in keeping the environment clean.
“As our youths need to be informed and educated about these dynamics in our society, much progress has been made in drawing attention to education, but youths must also be inspired to act and give energy and support local community development and conversation activities so as to abate the current and impending challenges,” he said.
Minister Chombo said climate change and global warming were contributing to the pollution of the environment.
“Environment issues have never received as much attention as in recent years due to global warming and climate change which have wide ranging and mostly damaging impacts on biodiversity, human health and agricultural production,” he said
He said environmental issues cut across all sectors of society and the economy while affecting the provision of goods and services.
“It has been shown that if care is not taken immediately, the impact of climate change on our world will erode any gains in achieving Millennium Development Goals as well as national goals,” he said.
Speaking at the same occasion the UN country coordinator Mr Alain Noudehou urged youths to work with their governments in cleaning and maintaining the environment.
