FOUR organisations joined hands to commemorate Earth Day and encourage people to make the world a better place for everyone to live in.
Emerald Climate Hub, All For Climate Action (AFCA), SCAT and Harare City Council came together to mark Earth Day under the theme ‘Invest In Our Planet’.
They conducted a clean-up exercise at Harare Gardens.
Emerald Climate Hub founder, Tafadzwa Kurotwi, emphasised the importance of individual responsibility in protecting the environment.
She said the greatest threat to the planet was the belief that someone else will save it.
Everyone, she said, had a role to play in ensuring that the planet remains safe and sustainable for future generations.
“l urge all the youths to keep pushing no matter what and make sure that we leave no one behind in this initiative to ensure that we save mother earth. We should all do our part to protect the environment by reducing waste and conserving natural resources,” said Tafadzwa.
She said there was a need for more refuse bins and for anti-litter laws to be implemented.
“We are pleading with responsible authorities to make sure that there are more bins and better laws which punish all those who throw litter everywhere,” she said.
All For Climate Action programmes leader, Isheunesu Madembo, said there was insufficient knowledge about the dangers posed by plastic pollution to the environment and wildlife.
He encouraged members of the public to report any environmental violations.
