A TWO-DAY cascading climate and health risks in African cities workshop opened in the capital today, attracting the City of Harare’s various departments, representatives from the Government and other sectors.

In an interview, a climate scientist based at the Climate System Analysis Group at the University of Cape Town, Mr Christopher Jack, said the workshop is a learning lab and part of a broader cascade project, looking at the cascading effects of climate and health in the cities.

“This is the second learning lab that we are running and at this learning lab we are trying to focus on understanding how climate impacts health in this city and in particular what are some of the interventions that we can start implementing and the policy and planning to limit the impact of climate and health in Harare,” he said.

Mr Jack said they intend to invite a wide group of stakeholders from the city so that they have several participants present.

“We have people from the Government, the different city departments; health, engineering, water and waste management,” he said.

“We are also trying to invite community organisations, civil society organisations involved in health or community projects vulnerable communities.”
