A local country club, Lush, last week joined the world in commemorating World Mental Health Day.
It is an international day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy. Speaking during the commemoration on Friday, Lush Country Club managing director Ms Racquel Hall urged women to use their collective voice to speak out against discrimination.
“I had the privilege of working with the amazing team here at the country club and one of our visions is wellness and lifestyle,” she said.
“October is a month of mental health. As we commemorate world mental health awareness day, as a woman I wanted to play my part in the conversation about mental, emotional and spiritual wellness.
“This is really to talk about things that are not usually spoken about and specifically in the month of October.”
She urged women to come together and speak out against stigma.
“My word to women out there is: have your voice heard.
“A lot of times we are apologetic about some of the things we go through as women. I have been in an abusive relationship and I have come out stronger at the other end of it. So I know that it is possible to come out of a struggle.”
South African wellness specialist Neli Manzi, who was guest of honour, said women should not look down upon themselves.
“We have been invited to empower women and show them the possibilities and how amazing they are.
“We want to say to women that this is their time to rise and reach for their dreams and we want to celebrate them,” she said.
South African poets Hope Netshivhambe and Refiliwe Matsose attended the event.
