CMED mechanic up for swindling

Court Reporter
A trainee mechanic at CMED (Pvt) Ltd reportedly lied to a Harare man that the company was having a second-hand vehicle auction and he could purchase a car for him there — and then swindled him of US$10 960. Tapiwa Chipfuyamiti (35) of number 1801 Kambuzuma Section 5 in Harare yesterday appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei facing fraud charges and was remanded to January 9 next year on US$100 bail. Prosecutor Ms Sharon Mashavira told the court that Chipfuyamiti approached Franscis Motsi and told him that there was going to be a second-hand vehicle auction sale at CMED.

He allegedly advised him that the auction was for CMED employees and that he was able to purchase a vehicle on his behalf.

Motsi, in the company of his workmate Golden Tombe, proceeded to Chipfuyamiti’s workplace where they were allegedly shown several vehicles parked in the company premises.

Allegedly from November 1 to December 4 this year Motsi gave Chipfuyamiti cash amounting to US$10 960 to purchase six cars: an Isuzu double cab, an Isuzu single cab, a Toyota Vigo, a Nissan double cab, a Nissan Navara, and an Isuzu KB LX single cab. Chipfuyamiti allegedly did not purchase any of the vehicles and converted the money to his personal use.
