THE Zimbabwe Soccer Coaches Association chairman Bekhimpilo Nyoni has encouraged clubs to give flexible, but long-term contracts to coaches if they want to achieve the desired success on the field of play.Nyoni said coaches who sign one-year contracts with clubs are uncertain of their future and would therefore deliver little to the teams.
He said a coach who is assured of more time at a club can work out both short-term and long-term objectives.
“A number of our coaches have been asked to sign performance based short-term contracts, which may not be renewed.
“Some coaches were asked to produce results and it was shown by their teams winning promotion or finishing in certain positions on the log.
“And when the coaches were content that they had done a great job, the administrators are negotiating with someone else to take the jobs,” he said.
Nyoni’s comments come in apparent reference to former Triangle coach Gishon Ntini and ex-ZPC coach Jostein Mathuthu-Mambo whose contracts were not renewed.
“Coaches cannot plan for longer if they are not sure of their stay at the club. It will be ideal of give coaches contracts of three-years and they should be appraisals. But the problem with football people in Zimbabwe is that they are desperate to get jobs and just sign a short-term contract,” said Nyoni.
Nyoni, however, also took a dig at some of his fellow coaches who are in the habit of back-stabbing others in order to secure jobs. “Some coaches are desperate to get a job and they go out to back-stab their colleagues instead of being supportive and this is very unprofessional,” said Nyoni.
