Leading beverage, Coca Cola is being used as a vehicle to unite and promote Africa’s most famed and up-and-coming artistes by facilitating collaborations.
Artistes of different musical backgrounds are teamed up to compose a track at the Coke Studio in Johannesburg, South Africa. The entire making of the song is recorded for a show called Coke Studio to give viewers a feel of the whole production.
“The song-making process, from start to finish, is caught on camera giving audiences a ‘fly-on-the-wall’ look into how the music is made.
Viewers can watch their favourite musicians in action, witness all the behind-the-scenes drama and most importantly, listen to each artist perform their fusion track.
“The product of which is something never been seen or heard before,” Coca-Cola Zimbabwe brand manager – Vee Chibanda said.
She said the 16 week music show in its fourth week is now on ZBCtv where it airs every Tuesday at 6:30PM.
Artists such as Oliver Mtukudzi, Mi Casa, Cassper Nyovest and The Mahotella Queens have been in the studio thus far for various collaborations. Tuku collaborated with Kalawa Jazzmee’s Busiswa for a track called Gidah. More local artistes are expected to feature at the studio for a new edition of Coke Studio that starts in August this year.
“Coke Studio is unlike any music show currently playing on Zimbabwean televisions. Artists from entirely different genres and backgrounds pair up, fuse their styles and come up with an entirely new track in just three days,” Chibanda said.
“We’ve chosen some of Africa’s best artistes and challenged them to use what makes them unique – their background, their nationality, their musical genre – and fuse it with someone else’s.”
She said Coke Studio had opened doors for undiscovered talent in Africa through their Coke Studio RAW.
“Studio RAW was introduced to give struggling, talented artists who are not signed to a label, a chance to break into the industry.
Up-and-coming artists were given two days in a professional studio to work up a track with two up and coming producers. Eight of the 16 artists from RAW made it into Coke Studio and will be featured on the show.
