adminROME. – Ashley Cole has accused English soccer players of being scared to play abroad. The 33-year-old left-back spoke for the first time as a Serie A player since completing his free transfer to Roma from Chelsea.
And his comments came in the wake of England’s disastrous campaign in Brazil, their worst World Cup since 1958.
The defender, who played at three World Cups but was omitted from England’s plans for this summer’s finals in Brazil, said English players feel comfortable in the UK.
“This is a chance for me to try a different language, culture and way of living. I’m not afraid of pressure. I noticed the fans’ passion and love as soon as I landed. I’m going to enjoy my time here.”
Cole, one of the most decorated English players of all time, was left out of Roy Hodgson’s final 23 after being a fringe player at Stamford Bridge.He denied having a problem with the Blues’ boss Jose Mourinho, but claimed he was surplus to requirements at the west Londoners. – The Mirror.
He added: “I’ve always had a good relationship with Jose Mourinho, but I was no longer useful to his project at Chelsea.
“I came here to play in the Champions League. Roma is an ambitious club, it’s a challenge for me and I’m prepared to fight for my place.
Hopefully we can do something special here next season and win Serie A.”
Cole lifted two league titles at Arsenal, including their Invincibles triumph in 2004. He also clinched three FA Cups before moving on to Chelsea.
At Stamford Bridge he claimed another Premier League title, four FA Cups, the League Cup, the European Cup and the Europa League before being released in May.
