College games begin

THE 13th edition of the Zimbabwe Teachers College Sports Association (Zitcosa) Games begin at Mkoba Teachers College today.
This year’s competition will run until Saturday.The athletes will compete in 15 disciplines which include football, rugby, table tennis, darts, golf, athletics and chess.
Karate and pool have also been incorporated in this year’s festival.

Zitcosa president, Edward Chekure said the games have maintained the same format from last year’s when colleges were grouped in zones depending on their geographical location.

Zone A consists of colleges from Masvingo and Manicaland who are the defending champions, Zone B comprising Midlands, Bulawayo and the two Matabeleland provinces and Zone C which has Harare and the three Mashonaland provinces.

Chekure urged sports clubs and organisations in different disciplines to come and identify talent that is abundant in college sport.

“We are calling on the sport loving community as well as clubs from different sporting disciplines to come to the games as we have abundant talent which if nurtured could become household names,” he said.

Lloyd Hlahla, Dumaza Dube, Taurai Mangwiro, Max Chambarara and Joe Kangwari who turned out for former premiership sides were stars of the Masvingo colleges team in the mid 1990s.

Abraham Mbaiwa, who turns out for Zifa Southern Region Division One outfit Plumtree Chiefs, turned out for Hillside Teachers’ College.
Chekure said a team to represent Zitcosa will be selected to compete at the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sport Union games to be held later this year.
