Collen Makaza, Manuel shine

ON a weekend when a number Zimbabwean sports-persons did well on the international scene, from athletics, golf, motorsport and bowling in various age groups, it was the duo of Collen Makaza and Daiyaan Manuel who shone brightest.

Four years after his first victory, Makaza won the IAU 50km World Trophy Final in Doha, Qatar, on Friday where conditions tested him to the limit.

Makaza won in 3hours 41seconds while Great Britain’s Phil Anthony was second.

Harm Sengers of the Netherlands was third in 3:05:01, having covered the second half of the race one minute quicker than the first. Manuel was the toast of the Zimbabwe motocross team that travelled to South Africa over the weekend when he finished first in the 50cc Pro Class during the first-ever Monster Supercross Africa in Pretoria.

The St John’s College Preparatory pupil has been a ball fire this year, dominating the scene in Zimbabwe and South Africa, where he was virtually untouchable in the 50cc Pro Class.

Golfer Brendon De Jong finished 13th at the CIMB Classic, tied with five other golfers — Lee Westwood, Kevin Chapell, Brian Stard, Jonas Blink and Danny Lee — to pocket US$123 666,66 and take his season tally to $670 262.

Having made the cut, De Jonge sparkled with a third-round seven-under-par 65 to settle in the top 10.

But in the final round he appeared to falter as he shot a 71. The Zimbabwe bowlers were in Namibia where the men’s side scooped a gold overall while the women came third overall in the Quadrangular Bowls Series at the Windhoek Country Club on Sunday. The Zimbabwe men’s managed two points in Pairs, four in Trips, Four in Singles and three in Fours to give them a total of 13 that was good enough for a gold medal.

With four categories in the tournament, Zimbabwe women managed a total of nine that comprised two in Fours, one in Singles, four in Trips and two in Pairs leaving them at number three to get the bronze medal.
