President Mugabe appointed Vice President Dr Joice Mujuru to be acting President while he is in Vienna, Austria attending the Second United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCS).
Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda, confirmed the appointment in a letter to the VP.
“You are hereby being notified that His Excellency the President has appointed you to act as President from 1 to 6 November 2014,” read the letter.
The President left Harare over the weekend and was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi.
They arrived in Vienna on Sunday. The conference drew member-states of the LLDCS, transit developing countries and donor countries, the UN and other international organisations.
The LLDCS are aiming at coming up with solutions to challenges faced by developing countries without access to the sea, mainly high transport costs which have become a barrier to international trade.
The President, together with other leaders attending the conference, are expected to come up with a new development agenda for landlocked developing countries for the next decade.
President Mugabe is scheduled to deliver his keynote address at the conference today.
