“We would like to congratulate the girls for emulating our senior soccer team. They have done us proud by being promoted to the Super League.
“So we have two teams playing in the country’s elite leagues and we salute them for uplifting our image.
“What is pleasing is that the girl-child is also a flag bearer for the company at a national level. Notably, it’s good to see two teams also from the region playing at that level,” said Dube.
Hwange netball was missing for a while from the national front after economic conditions of the period before 2009 made life difficult for sport. Companies were struggling and they had to cut down on expenditure on social responsibility programmes.
Dube said the company would do its best to ensure the girls become competitive opponents and fulfil their fixtures.
Travelling has been one of the biggest challenges faced by teams in netball. Champions Railstars several teams failed to fulfil their away matches.
Hwange will have to dig deep into their resources to take the club to Mutare, Harare, Chinhoyi, Bulawayo, Kwekwe and Shamva for matches. With the opposition also to come to the Colliery, travelling should not be a factor in their final log position as the same factors would affect the other teams when they make the long trip to Hwange.
Netball is the only predominantly women’s sport in Hwange and still commands good crowds at matches.
Last year Hwange sports officer Kenny Nyape predicted that the town’s sport would come alive in 2012 as a lot of time and resources had been invested in local sport. Village games were revived in a number of sporting events.
Glow Petroleum, Hwange, Beta Holdings, Mutare Polytechnic, Chocolate Queens and Chinhoyi Queens were promoted to the Super League.
Demoted to the provincial leagues were Harvest Queens, Harare Districts, Rainbow Towers, Chaminuka and Jazeera.
