RED-HOT content creator Comic Elder, has taken the internet by storm, cementing his status as one of Zimbabwe’s most beloved entertainers. The 23-year-old comedian, born Leroy Tadiwanashe Zaware in rural Murewa, has risen from humble beginnings to become a national treasure whose name and face are now everywhere.
Social media is abuzz with the chorus, “It’s Comic Elder everywhere!” His rapid rise has not only won him millions of fans but has also attracted major brands eager to work with him as an ambassador or creative partner.
Comic Elder’s defining moment came last week when he scooped the Best Comedy Award at the inaugural Youth Symposium, a milestone that earned him a brand-new Ford Raptor from President Mnangagwa. Their humorous exchange at the awards ceremony became an instant hit, firmly establishing him as a comedian the nation could no longer ignore.
Since then, his fame has drawn support from prominent figures, including businessman Wicknell Chivhayo, who gifted him US$150 000 to purchase a house.
Reflecting on his success, Comic Elder said the attention feels surreal.
“To be honest, everything happening in my life feels like a miracle. I grew up a naughty child, always making jokes in class and disrupting lessons. As a professional actor, I only started in 2023, but through patience, hard work and focus, everything is falling into place,” he said.
Despite his newfound fame, Comic Elder remains grounded and grateful. On Monday, he posted a heartfelt message thanking President Mnangagwa, Youth Minister Tinoda Machakaire, and Mr Tungwarara for their continued support of young creatives.
“This gesture is a powerful reminder of your commitment to uplifting Zimbabwean youth and empowering talent across diverse sectors. I am humbled and motivated to continue serving our nation through creative arts,” he wrote.
With over 900 000 followers on Facebook, Comic Elder is more than a comedian — he is a movement. His influence extends beyond laughter, inspiring a new generation of creators under the Mugwaku College mentorship initiative.
“I always tell up-and-coming comedians to be consistent and patient. In this profession, money comes later, but passion and discipline must come first,” he said.
As fame reshapes his life, Comic Elder acknowledges the challenges of maintaining old friendships and adjusting to new circles.
“Some may think I’ve changed, but it’s really my busy schedule. I’ll never forget where I came from,” he clarified.
He also revealed how he broke into acting after failing his Ordinary Level examinations.
“My parents wanted me to be a boilermaker, but after failing, I moved to Harare, where I met Nijo, Comic Pastor and others who inspired me to act,” he shared.
Despite his growing popularity, the comedian remains disciplined, especially around adoring female fans.
“Fame attracts attention, but self-control is key. Some women follow success, but the same can leave when things go wrong. I’m single, but I remain cautious,” he said with a laugh.
Comic Elder’s brand now stretches across multiple ventures, from commercials to content creation and cheerleading for Scottland FC. Known for his punctuality and professionalism, he says he values those who trust in his craft.
The success of comedians like Vharazipi, Kapfupi and Bhutisi has shown that the comedy industry in Zimbabwe is thriving and Comic Elder stands tall among them. His journey, from a mischievous boy in Murewa to a household name, is proof that determination and authenticity can turn dreams into reality.
