Command Fisheries now in schools

Government, through the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), has started training schools on the Command Fisheries Programme, as it seeks to promote national food security. In an interview yesterday, Zimparks spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo said the programme was well underway.

“We are mandated by Government to ensure we improve food security in the country at household level,” he said. “We have since started a programme of supplying schools with free fingerlings as part of the Command Fisheries programme.”
Zimparks, he said, was assisting schools with technical expertise on aquaculture.

“We are first conducting trainings with schools on how best to do fish farming,” said Mr Farawo. “We are also offering training to individuals who intend to venture into fish farming, but on locals, they are buying the fingerlings by themselves. However, the price is very affordable.”

Speaking during a belated provincial World Wetlands Day celebrations held at Chinhoyi Caves recently, Zimparks northern region official Mr Petros Mwera said schools that were ready for the programme in Chinhoyi should approach the authority for assistance.

“Aquatic life can sustain lives if we take good care of wetlands,” he said. “One of the best ways of conserving our wetlands we have organised is a programme of supplying all schools with free fingerlings. In Chinhoyi, schools willing to partake in the programme should approach us so that we organise on and start offering trainings.”

Government launched the national fisheries programme last year.
