The Zimbabwe National Students Union (zinasu) has threatened to unleash terror at universities to press for MDC Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa to win the forthcoming elections. Speaking at an MDC Alliance rally in Chinhoyi on Sunday, zinasu secretary-general Mr Ashley Pfunye said they will close university campuses this year to force a win for Chamisa.
This comes hardly two weeks after students at the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) clashed with anti-riot police leading to the injury of at least five students.
The students sealed off the university in the early hours of Monday last week, while demonstrating against their administration’s alleged failure to pay lecturers’ salaries.
“As students we are going to stand and make sure that we close campuses. We will not give Zanu-PF a chance,” said Mr Pfunye.
“We are closing campuses this year, this January and this February going forward.
“We are closing campuses. So we are going to demonstrate and close all the campuses because the students do not want (President) Mnangagwa, but Chamisa.”
President Mnangagwa will square off with Mr Chamisa and several other opposition presidential hopefuls in elections whose date is yet to be proclaimed.
President Mnangagwa has shown magnanimity by congratulating Mr Chamisa on his elevation to lead the MDC-T before calling for “competitive, peaceful and positive election campaigns” that will give the electorate a clear and democratic choice.
Mr Chamisa’s ascendance to the helm of the opposition MDC-T party and MDC Alliance following the death of founding president, Morgan Tsvangirai, has been characterised by violence.
