COMMENT: 120 years of bridging nations and dreams

Economies flourish where roads are smooth and ports are efficient.

Investors follow the hum of well-oiled machinery and the rhythm of reliable logistics.

A bridge like Victoria Falls doesn’t just connect Zambia and Zimbabwe — it connects ambition to opportunity, local markets to global ones, and regional dreams to continental realities.

Celebrating 120 years of service, the Victoria Falls Bridge stands not only as a marvel of engineering but as a linchpin of regional connectivity and economic vitality in southern Africa.

Spanning the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe, this iconic steel structure is far more than a bridge — it is a conduit for trade, tourism and transnational co-operation.

As the only rail link and one of just three road connections between Zambia and Zimbabwe, the bridge plays a pivotal role in facilitating the movement of goods, people and services. It is a vital artery for regional commerce, linking southern Africa to key markets in South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This strategic importance is magnified under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to deepen economic integration across the continent. The bridge’s role in enabling seamless cross-border trade aligns perfectly with AfCFTA’s vision of a unified African market.

The bridge’s enduring relevance also resonates with global infrastructure initiatives like China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which emphasises connectivity and economic corridors. While not directly part of the BRI, the Victoria Falls Bridge embodies the spirit of such programs — facilitating regional development through robust infrastructure.

Its continued maintenance and projected lifespan of 200 years underscore its potential to serve future generations as a cornerstone of African logistics and mobility.

Beyond its economic utility, the bridge is a magnet for global tourism. Offering breathtaking views of the Victoria Falls and adrenaline-fueled activities like bungee jumping and zip-lining, it draws thousands of adventure seekers annually.

Weekly train tours across the bridge provide a unique blend of history, cuisine and natural beauty, reinforcing its status as a premier destination for experiential travel.

Constructed in 1905, the bridge is a testament to early 20th-century engineering prowess.

Its majestic arch and enduring steel frame have withstood the test of time, thanks to rigorous maintenance protocols and bi-national co-operation.

The bridge’s projected operational lifespan until 2105 is a tribute to the collaborative efforts of Zambian and Zimbabwean engineers and security personnel, ensuring its safety and functionality for decades to come.

When a nation tends to its infrastructure, it is not just maintaining roads or repairing railways — it is safeguarding its future. Each inspection, each coat of paint, each bolt tightened is a silent vow to its people: “You will move safely. You will trade freely. You will thrive.”
