COMMENT: Be anxious about your health more than lockdown

We stand on the threshold of the expiry of the lockdown period and whether the lockdown is extended, modified, or lifted altogether, one thing is certain, we still need to be very alert and practise good personal hygiene and social distancing.

Our plea to the public is that let us continue to adhere to the good practices being advocated by the health authorities so that we save many lives and spare the country a heavier burden from Covid-19. At the time of writing, Zimbabwe had 40 confirmed cases from over 7 000 tests and screenings for Covid-19.

When the first 21 days of lockdown came into effect at the end of March we had less than five cases in the country and now after a 14-day extension cases have risen to 40, raising concerns that there was still more room for improvement in terms of protecting ourselves from Covid-19.

Let us not tire in doing the right thing to keep safe and also keep our loved ones safe as well. When the Covid-19 infection broke out around the world, there was a sense among many that it would soon pass but we are now into the fifth month since the outbreak was reported in China and there is no sign of the pandemic receding.

With over two million confirmed cases and over 200 000 deaths worldwide, we believe it is time we all took this infection seriously. Let us start making our own face masks, and we believe the washing of hands has become second nature to us while loitering without purposeful intent should be completely eliminated lest you bring the infection to your family.

While we still have a long way to go in terms of testing, if we stick to the precautions given by health authorities, this will slow down the pandemic and enable our health systems to cope with the load. Let us therefore be less anxious about which way the pendulum might swing in terms of the lockdown but be more focused on slowing down the disease so that there is no need in future to even consider a lockdown.
