COMMENT : Police probed for illicit drug peddling

Stephen Mpofu

Beware! Beware! Beware: the noose is hovering over the necks of law enforcement agents found helping in the distribution of drugs and substances.

Some people phoning in to a local radio station claimed a few days ago, that the drugs and substance problem in our country continues unabated because some police officers get paid by drug dealers to turn a blind eye on the goings-on.

In response to the phone-ins Police Commissioner, Paul Nyathi said yesterday that the Police Commissioner General has “zero tolerance” on law enforcement agents engaging in the distribution of the dangerous drugs and that investigations would be launched. He said those found guilty would face the full wrath of the law.

A member of the public who, like others phoning in, warned that the drugs and substances rampantly being distributed in urban as well as peri-urban areas have destructive effects on mental faculties.

He said school children who take energy drinks along with other substances to energise them so that they don’t sleep as they prepare for their mid year and end of year exams do not realise that the substances and drugs destroy their brain elements, making it difficult for them to recover and be useful members of society.

This impels parents and guardians to play pivotal roles in protecting their offspring
from addiction to drugs and substances for their good as well as the nation’s good.

Parents, for instance, should not spare the rod but must take remedial action by ensuring that their children are protected from drugs and substances abuse. One parental way is to involve medical experts if the actions or behaviour appears abnormal while it is also important for them and the neighbourhood watch committees to police their areas against any dealers in illicit drugs and substances who may rear their ugly heads in the residential areas.

A lot of resources, material and monetary, are being spent to prepare young generations through education in hopes that brave new futures will be realised under their guidance.

As such, to hell with drugs and substances along with distributors and any law enforcement elements helping to perpetuate the scourge that grips young people in our country today.
