THE meteoric rise of Victoria Falls International Airport is far more than a spike in passenger numbers — it’s a bold stride into a future of economic dynamism, regional cohesion, and global visibility. It’s where runways meet opportunity, where tourism fuels transformation, and where Zimbabwe positions itself not just as a destination, but as a connector, linking Southern Africa to the world through the powerful engine of MICE tourism and strategic aviation expansion.
Zimbabwe’s bold investment in aviation infrastructure under President Mnangagwa’s leadership is reshaping the nation’s economic and geopolitical landscape. For example, the US$153 million expansion of Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport is more than a facelift. It serves as a launchpad for Vision 2030.
By increasing passenger capacity from 2,5 million to 6,5 million annually, the Government is not only modernising transport but also unlocking new avenues for tourism, trade, and foreign investment.
As we reported yesterday, the exponential growth of Victoria Falls International Airport is a landmark achievement for Zimbabwe and the broader Southern African region. Surpassing half a million passengers in 2024 and continuing strong momentum into 2025 is not just a recovery story — it’s a transformation narrative.
Economically, this surge is driving job creation, stimulating local entrepreneurship, and increasing foreign currency inflows through tourism-related spending. The hospitality, transport, and retail sectors are all experiencing a ripple effect of this aviation boom.
Regionally, the airport’s expansion is fostering deeper integration across Southern Africa. Enhanced connectivity — such as Fastjet’s new Bulawayo-Victoria Falls route and Airlink’s expanded services — makes it easier for travellers, businesses, and event organisers to move across borders, strengthening trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.
This positions Victoria Falls as a strategic node in the regional transport network.
Globally, the rise of MICE tourism is elevating Zimbabwe’s profile on the international stage. Hosting high-profile events like COP15 not only boosts passenger numbers but also showcases the country’s capacity to host world-class conventions.
MICE tourism is a high-value segment that attracts decision-makers, investors, and influencers, bringing long-term benefits beyond the immediate economic gains. The Government’s push to make Zimbabwe a premier destination for conferences and conventions is clearly bearing fruit, with Victoria Falls emerging as a global meeting point for environmental, business, and policy dialogues.
Strategic investments in aviation infrastructure are not just about construction. They are about ambition. They reflect a government walking the talk on industrialisation, connectivity, and economic diversification.
As more airlines open routes and tourism rebounds, Zimbabwe is taking flight — both literally and figuratively — toward a more prosperous and connected future.
