COMMENT: Rewarding the spirit of daring to dream

The remarkable journey of Vusumuzi Mkandla and Thando Tshuma, who cycled approximately 13 300 kilometres across 22 African countries, is a powerful celebration of courage, determination and the limitless possibilities that come with daring to dream big.

From the rural communities of Gokwe to meeting President Mnangagwa, the young Zimbabwean couple have demonstrated that humble beginnings need not limit ambition. Their achievement is an inspiring reminder that with determination, hard work and a clear vision, young people can overcome barriers and accomplish extraordinary things.

Their story deserves to be celebrated, not only for the incredible distance they covered, but also for the message it carries to young Zimbabweans: the world is full of opportunities waiting to be explored by those prepared to take the first step.

At a time when the country is encouraging young people to embrace innovation, entrepreneurship and self-reliance, Mkandla and Tshuma have provided a living example of what initiative and perseverance can achieve. Their expedition across the continent exposed them to different cultures and experiences while showcasing the adventurous spirit and potential of Zimbabwean youth.

The recognition they have received, including their meeting with the President, adds another special chapter to their journey. Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training Minister Tino Machakaire said the President had committed to supporting their dreams and tasked him with facilitating the assistance.

The minister’s proposal to provide the couple with a decent home is particularly welcome. A home offers stability, security and a foundation on which a young family can build its future. If the proposed support comes to fruition, it will be a meaningful way of recognising the couple’s determination and helping them take the next step in their lives.

Such gestures also demonstrate the value of connecting young people with opportunities that enable them to turn their aspirations into lasting achievements. When talent, determination and the right support come together, the benefits can extend beyond individuals to families and communities.

Mkandla and Tshuma’s story also shines a spotlight on the opportunities presented by adventure tourism, cycling and travel storytelling. Their journey across 22 countries offers a compelling platform for showcasing African cultures, landscapes and experiences, while encouraging more young people to explore tourism and related entrepreneurial ventures.

Their achievement should inspire other young Zimbabweans to identify their passions, set ambitious goals and work consistently towards them.

Whether in sport, business, agriculture, technology, tourism or the creative industries, there is room for young people to develop their talents and contribute meaningfully to national development.

Government, the private sector and communities all have a role to play in nurturing this spirit by encouraging innovation, providing mentorship and creating opportunities for young people to develop their ideas and skills.

The cyclists’ experience is a reminder that extraordinary journeys often begin with a simple decision to believe in an idea and pursue it with commitment. Their story has travelled far beyond the roads they cycled, reaching young people who may now be encouraged to dream bigger about their own futures.

As Zimbabwe continues to invest in youth empowerment and development, Mkandla and Tshuma offer an inspiring example of the potential that exists within the country’s young people.

Their 13 300km adventure has shown that no dream is too big when courage meets determination.

May their journey encourage a generation of young Zimbabweans to dream boldly, work hard and turn their ambitions into achievements that make the nation proud.
