ZIMBABWE is set to celebrate Munhumutapa Day tomorrow (15 September), marking President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s birthday and honouring his visionary leadership.
The day is a tribute to the President’s efforts in steering the country towards Vision 2030, a blueprint aimed at transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income economy.
The celebration is meant to promote unity and national pride.
The significance of the Munhumutapa Empire can never be overemphasised as it embodies unity, courage resilieance and a spirit of hardworking that has inspired Zimbabwean generations to this day.
The Munhumutapa Empire, a powerful and prosperous kingdom in southern Africa, is credited with building the Great Zimbabwe monument using local expertise.

By adopting this historical figure, President Mnangagwa’s administration seeks to draw parallels between the empire’s values of unity, peace and resilience and the country’s current development trajectory.
The President has emphasised the importance of embracing these values to achieve national prosperity.
His leadership has been marked by significant developments in infrastructure, mining, tourism and agriculture, as well as initiatives aimed at empowering the youth.
The developments have been achieved through the use of local resources under his “nyika inovakwa nevene vayo/ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo” philosophical guidance.
His administration has also launched initiatives aimed at empowering the youth, such as the Munhumutapa National Youth Housing Programme.
These efforts are most welcomed. We also believe that more will be done.
Indeed, the celebration of Munhumutapa Day presents an opportunity for Zimbabweans to reflect on their history and the country’s progress under the astute leadership of President Mnangagwa.
For the Munhumutapa Day, there have been some noble intentions in elevating its status to that of a public holiday and see nothing wrong with that.
However, the Government has clarified that it is not a public holiday and businesses will operate as usual.
As the nation looks towards Vision 2030, it is essential to ensure that the values of unity, peace and resilience embodied by the Munhumutapa Empire are realised.
Ultimately, Munhumutapa Day should inspire collective action towards a brighter future for Zimbabwe.
Marked by significant developments in infrastructure, mining, tourism, and agriculture, as well as initiatives aimed at empowering the youth.
