Respected American commentator Brandel Chamblee likened Woods’ behaviour this season to that of a fourth-grade schoolboy cheating at exams. While the comments on Golf.com were probably intended as tongue-in-cheek, Woods’ manager Mark Steinberg has threatened legal action, leading Chamblee to retract his accusation.
“Golf is a gentleman’s game and I’m not proud of this debate. I want to apologise to Tiger for this incited discourse,” wrote Chamblee.
“My intention was to note Tiger’s rules infractions this year, but comparing that to cheating in grade school went too far.”
The original comments reflected on Woods’ successful season, which has seen him win five titles.
Chamblee recalled an incident in his own childhood, when a teacher marked his grade card with an ‘F’ after catching him cheating in an exam.
He then went on to mark Woods’ own season with an ‘F’.
