THE Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission has condemned the fatal shooting of a police officer at Sanyati Charge Office and described the incident as a senseless act of violence that threatens public safety and the rule of law.

Constable Muchechesi was shot dead in the early hours of October 26, 2025 while performing his duties at the charge office.

According to preliminary reports, the officer was attending to a complainant when an armed assailant entered the charge office and opened fire, killing him instantly.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched investigations into the incident.

In a statement, ZHRC expressed sorrow and concern over the death and extended condolences to the officer’s family, colleagues and the entire law enforcement community.

“The commission condemns this senseless act of violence in the strongest possible terms. Such acts not only undermine the sanctity of life but also threaten public safety and the rule of law,” reads the statement.

The human rights watchdog said the killing of a police officer while on duty represents a grave violation of the fundamental rights to life, personal security and safe labour standards as enshrined in sections 48, 52, and 65 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

The ZHRC reaffirmed its constitutional mandate under section 243 to protect and promote human rights, ensure administrative justice and uphold accountability within public institutions.

It called on law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough investigation that accords with constitutional safeguards of the rights of all concerned to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

The commission further urged authorities to tighten enforcement of gun control laws to safeguard both the public and security personnel.

“The Commission stands firm in its commitment to work with relevant authorities and communities to promote a culture of respect for human rights, peace, and the rule of law,” reads the statement.

Police have appealed to members of the public to cooperate with investigators by providing any information that could assist in identifying the suspect or suspects behind the attack.
