Community backlash against lesbian couple sparks controversy

Sunday News Reporter

IN a shocking incident that has stirred controversy in Waterfalls Derbyshire, Harare, a lesbian couple, Samantha Anesu Madzvimbo and Ruvimbo Mangadze, found themselves at the center of a storm after being caught engaging in a sexual act.

The couple’s private moment was abruptly interrupted when a group of residents, who had allegedly been monitoring their affair closely, burst into their house and subjected them to a citizen’s arrest.

According to a relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the incident unfolded when the vigilante group from Waterfalls took matters into their own hands, alleging that the couple’s behavior was against community morals. “They stormed into the house and beat them up before handing them over to the police,” the relative revealed.

The outrage didn’t end there, as residents of the suburb staged a demonstration, expressing their discontent with the couple’s relationship. “They are causing our youth to lose their morals,” said one demonstrator, highlighting the community’s perception of the couple’s actions.

Expressing strong sentiments against the couple, a resident in the suburb declared that they would not rest until Samantha, who resides in the Waterfalls house, is barred from the suburb. “They are bringing a foreign act to our midst, which is taboo in our culture,” the relative asserted.

The incident has ignited a heated debate about LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance within Zimbabwean society, with advocates condemning the violence and discrimination faced by the couple. Meanwhile, authorities have yet to comment on the matter, leaving the fate of Samantha and Ruvimbo uncertain as they navigate the aftermath of the incident in Waterfalls Derbyshire.
