Community leader helps Greendale residents

A COMMUNITY leader has struck a deal with the Harare City Council set to benefit Greendale residents in refuse collection.

Brian Shenje, a board member of the Greendale Residents and Ratepayers Association, said he successfully stopped a private refuse service and convinced residents to use that money to clear their council bills.

“Four months ago, refuse collection was erratic and uncoordinated in Ward 9, Greendale.

“I have managed to stop private refuse collection service and convinced people that we can work hand-in-hand with council by giving them the money that we were paying the private companies to cover our council bills.

“Since we introduced that programme in our community, council’s refuse collection is becoming more efficient,” he said.

Shenje said he is also conducting a recycling awareness campaign.

“The week off from refuse collection has been our ‘Recycling Awareness Week’ where we try to encourage residents to reduce the amount of waste going to the landfill.

“We want Greendale Ward 9 to be dump free next year. We have encourage residents to be on the lookout for people who dump litter so that we can get them sanctioned a sum of US$385,” Shenje said.
